Animal Farm - Classes 10 & 11

Por Cesar Fonseca.

Class Part X

In Class Part X, we will work on argumentation in oral and written modes. Start the class with a debate about the ten worst decisions ever made.

After that, have them read the text. Clear up vocabulary doubts students might have and praise them for having read a short story in English.

In the Discourse part, have them work in pairs. They have to write a paragraph defending their points of view in a very emphatic way. Help them out by brainstorming some language chunks used in argumentations.

In Discourse II, our role is to raise students’ awareness of the difference between spoken and written argumentation. Start the activity by talking about the meaning of the last paragraph. Play devil’s advocate.

Close the class by giving them some feedback on their performance and call their attention to the follow-up activity.

Class Part XI

In this class, we will be dealing with feelings and summaries.

For the Warm-up, promote a debate about their impressions of the book and see if they have ever read the other ones listed. You should encourage your students to read them since they are classics.

Start by reading the text with them and also clearing up vocabulary doubts. Keep board record.

In the Text Analysis part, promote a debate in letters “a” and “b.” You may use Picture 6.

In Activity 2—Summary—not only will they be working on summarizing skills, but also on listing the topics that have been presented so far. Arrange the class in groups. They are also supposed to make presentations. This listing activity will serve as a reminder of what they have studied in class.

For the Vocabulary task they, again, will need to use dictionaries. They are expected to create an example for each word. This activity can be done in pairs. They will also present their definitions and examples.

In Activity 4—George Orwell—they will have an extensive listening passage. For this reason, you had better ask them to read the questions carefully beforehand so as to be ready for what is to come. You can also check if they know something about Orwell’s biography. You are supposed to play the listening passage three times—twice through and once with pauses.

Finally, start the Follow-up activity. If you still have time, take advantage of that to have students start working on their paragraphs. Do your Closing afterwards.
