Class 05—February 27th and 28th
In Extra Class 5—Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Part 3), the goal is to chat about video games related to the movie, analyze the fights between Scott Pilgrim and the seven evil ex-boyfriends, and continue the comic strip project.
Activity 1—Warm-up—Type of Interaction 2. Ask students the question, telling them that Scott Pilgrim, the movie, has been made into a game and that they have to figure out the rules. Chat about students’ favorite games. Then introduce the concept of rules. Make sure you write chunks on the board (e.g., “you must,” “you have to”).
Activity 2—The Battle Begins—Type of Interaction 2. Do this activity together with students, guiding them. Play the first scene (00:16:38–00:17:20) and ask them what they would do if they received an email like that and why they think Scott thought it was boring. Then play the second scene (00:29:15–00:35:29) and ask students what Scott is going to face, what the ultimate goal is, and how he is going to achieve it. Use Class Correction with board support.
Activity 3—The Second Battle—Type of Interaction 2. Play the scene (00:45:00–00:51:12) and do the activity with them. Have them analyze the fight and keep board record of what they say. Use Class Correction.
Activity 4—Creating Your Own Comic Strip (Part 3)—Type of Interaction 2. Distribute the handout you collected last class so they can continue the comic strip they started. Monitor their work and help them out with the story and the drawings. There can be different drawings, but the writing must be the same.
Class 06—February 29th and March 1st
In Extra Class 6—Scott Pilgrim vs. The World (Part 4)—the goal is to give opinion about what is worth fighting for in life, predict the end of the story, write dialogues, and present the comic strip project.
Activity 1—Warm-up—Type of Interaction 2. Use the first question as a group chat. Ask students to use the sentence you are going to write on the board “I would fight for…because…”; then move on to the second question and explore what students know about the movie. Get their opinion and encourage them to use different chunks (e.g., “I think,” “I believe,” “In my opinion” etc.).
Activity 2—Interpreting and Writing—Type of Interaction 5. Start it by explaining the activity to the students. Play the first scene—the battle with the Japanese—with audio and subtitles in English (01:20:17–01:24:28). Then tell them you are going to play the scene with no audio. Play the second scene (01:24:57–01:27:15) and group them—using Type of Interaction 5—to write the dialogues. Use Group Correction before they present; close the activity by showing the scene again with audio and subtitles in English.
Activity 3—Finishing and Presenting Your Comic Strip—Type of Interaction 2. Divide students into groups and hand back the comic strip so they can add the final touches to their work and prepare their presentation. Be careful with your time management. Use Note Taking + Feedback. Collect their work and put it up on the wall as a token of recognition for their effort.
Home Assignment—They have to prepare the Video Analysis of Class 01—Modulo 09 (Book 3). Explain the activities and clear up doubts.
